We are grateful for our fantastic community partners, both centers of community engagement, the 14th Street Y, serving Manhattan’s East Village for many years, and the Morris Park Library, part of our wonderful NYC (NYPL) public library system. Both locations have had closures and adjustments, beginning March 2020, due to Covid-19 safety precautions, and are now open again for some in-person activities. Voices From War moved our programming to a remote (video conferencing) format on March 11th, 2020, using the “Zoom” platform.
While we love and miss our in-person community — we also want to report our successful online community gathering and ongoing engagement with our participants, their writing, literary discussion, and shared conversations! Having a way to continue community engagement–though remote for the time being–is all the more important as we continue to experience varied effects from the pandemic. Twice a week Voices From War continues to be socially connected “live” in real time through our virtual classrooms.
We look forward to meeting you (or seeing you back) and sharing discussions in our online classrooms.

Writing and Reading War Stories
In this workshop we write our own narratives, while reading excerpted fiction and non-fiction by veterans, military spouses, and select civilians. Each week, we share student work, learning from each others’ strengths and successes, while also discussing ways we can come closer to the stories we want to tell, whether just for ourselves or for a larger audience. The course is team-taught by two writers, a civilian and a veteran.
“If you succeed [in storytelling], you replace the fragments of memory with something that has its own shape and meaning, a separate thing that has value in itself.” - Tracy Kidder & Richard Todd
This is a free workshop for veterans.
Prior writing experience not required.
